Stay Auck Central or a neighboring town?

We are traveling to Auck central in December for 3 nights before heading to Hahei Beach for two nights then south to waitomo. We love wine, hiking, local experiences…there are 4 of us (2 kids 10 &13) and wondering if we should stay in Auck or stay in Henderson or head west? Like 30 mins out of town. OR stay in town and drive to wineries/west beach/hiking?? In other words what would be best to make most of our time?

It sounds as if your interest lie out-of-town, so I think you should consider Muriwai or other areas west of AKL, but bear in mind that crossing AKL can take a long time at busy times andit will add a fair bit of time to your trip to Coromandel.

Hi

Given your interests and the fact that you will be travelling with children I would suggest that you stay our of town and would recommend that you head for the Waitakere Range an area of exceptional natural beauty to the West of Auckland where you will find regenerating forest, stunning views, black sand beaches some 250 to 300kms of walking tracks. Places to consider are Karekare, Piha, Bethells Beach or just to the north of the Ranges Muriwau or the rural area around Kumeu to the north west of Auckland which is the closest to the wineries of west Auckland.

All of the above are about an hour from the city centre and the airport - Muriwai just over an hour depending on traffic and within easy reach of railway stations at New Lynn, Glen Eden, Henderson and Swanson if you wanted to go into the city.

Basing yourselves in the greater west Auckland area would add very little on your travel time to the Coromandel.

Hope this helps.

There is a lot to do in Auckland Central so I would suggest basing yourself there. you can go to mission bay for beach, get the ferry from the waterfront to rangitoto and walk to the summit. Or even kayak over there with a tour. Maybe even ferry to Waiheke to the beach and wineries.Kelly Tarltons aquarium, auckland zoo, sky tower are all places that would be of interest and easily accessible from central auckland. transport options so much better in central as well.

A central location offers better chances to explore on a wider basis. If you are located in Henderson, or further NW the commute back and forth into the city or harbour-based attractions will begin to lose its appeal early on .

There are some very nice 2 br motels, apartments and apartment-hotels in/around the CBD, Parnell, Newmarket, Epsom, Kohimarama, Herne Bay areas. All are handy to city attractions, as well as the motorway systems north (Hibiscus Coast), NW (to Henderson, Muriwai, Titirangi-Waitakere Ranges) as well as south (for Coromandel, Rotorua and Waitomo Caves).

Nothing wrong with Henderson though. It's now a sprawling suburb with good shopping centre, some accommodation and family-style dining. If you have friends or family nearby you may not be bothered being located away from the main attractions of the city proper.

But if you prefer a beach stay, with tramping and wines being the main focus of your Auckland visit, a holiday rental house in Muriwai or Bethels Beach areas may suit you best - including the beaches suggested by lonekauri, above? Some of these are listed on http://www.holidayhomes.co.nz/
