This is a helpful link...do you know if July rains are typically for an entire day or are they passing storms that clear up during the day?

NZ weather seldom lasts long - hang around and it will soon change

It can vary - usually weather is very changeable in Auckland so it can be 'four seasons in one day'. But July is the very middle of our winter so don't be surprised if the weather is bad and if the rain lasts all day.

Have know July to be mild but generally cold and wet. It is not so much that there are storms, it can rain for 2/3 days.

if you want dry weather head on down to the South Island.

Temps will be a bit cooler but a whole lot drier .... and it's more scenic :)

Spent a few weeks in NZ in July 2013:

Weather on South Island: sunny, around 15 degrees, no wind. Only one day with snow in the evening/night/morning (Queenstown).

Weather on NI: sunny, cloudy around 12 degrees. Two nights drizzling rain (Rotorua). No wind.

In short: lovely weather for outdoor seeing.

There is only one thing certain about New Zealand's weather - it is completely unpredictable from year to year and month to month and sometimes even from day to day. What weather we had last July could be entirely different to what gets thrown at us this July. Same with every other month. We get what we get and too bad if it is not what we want. :)

Thanks...I was considering only doing the North due to the warmer temps...but I hadn't figured in the rain factor.

Well said....you get what you get....would you agree that, in general, the North will be warmer but wetter than South?.
