which are the best glow worm caves in NZ?

Hello everyone, please can someone tell me which caves i should visit? - any experiences welcome good/bad...

so far i have found three options on our route:

Waitomo

Hokitika

Te Anau

I believe Waitomo and Te Anau are both boat experiences which sounds nice - but which one has the most glow worms and is the nicest experience? anyone visited any of them?

Hi

Although Waitomo are by far the most touristy, they are also widely recognised as the best, and having visited a couple of times, I can confirm that they are amazing.

As well as the standard boat trip through the caves, there are other ways of seeing the caves, esp. black water rafting (cruising through in an inner tube)

Waitomo but with Spellbound.

I've done the standards at all locations and this wins...hands down!

Yes, Waitomo would be top of my list too. Especially if you're up for the 'tubing' trip.

You mentioned the Hokitika glow worms. The site we visited in Hokitika was a grotto rather than a cave. There's no admission fee or opening hours. It's a public path which goes for about 100 metres between some bushes containing glow worms.

Nice for a 10-minute stroll if you're in the area at night, but not really worth a long detour.

The grotto is across the road from the Shining Star holiday park on the main road going north out of town. There's a brown sign to mark the start of the path.

By the way, the Te Anau glow worm cave involves a boat trip from town across the lake.

Cathy and I took the Spellbound tour at Waitomo yesterday, and it was simply SUPERB. Millions of glowworms, only 12 to a group, and a great guide. http://www.waitomospellbound.co.nz/

We're blogging our 30-day North Island campervan trip (10 days to go) at http://www.explorenorth.com/wordpress/ (with lots of photos) if you'd like to follow along.

While I think Waitomo was great for glowworms, i did not like the mass commercialised experiencee.

We visited Kawiti glow worm caves which were really good, there was only 4 people on our tour and the guide explained everything without any rush. Great surrondings and a peaceful spot.

The Spellbound tours are limited to 12 people and you're far away from the hordes of bus tour people.

Surfoz,

the Spellbound tours were ideal. as you know we are not mass market people and i think for us it was the value of not being in a huge group...

for the last bit it may have well been us and the lil gurus as we wandered up the hill and back to the bus (minivan)

We did ours peak and the guide (who was also an Aussie said most of the year they have around 6 pax on a tour, remeber we were peak NZ and Aus holiday period. They could well have sent 2 buses out as they had sufficient bookings and eqt but kept to the 12 pax only!

PS should add you don't go to the main caves only 10 mins from the village. the caves spellbound visit are about 45mins (or one vomit) from the main centre and have exclusive rights!

Sounds good GW, i will keep that in mind on our next visit.

What I really liked about Kawiti was the natural environment.
