waterfront suites

These look good but we're concerned that they might be a bit souless and also not Qualmark rated. Any comments? Especially about the pool?

We were really looking for something with a either a bit more character or with a really good pool, but a lot of our '1st' choices in Paihia, Opua or Russell either don't take children or are full on our dates. We're waiting on replies from some but would like advice- Crows Nest looks stunning but is it too far from beaches and restaurants etc? And is Russell more interesting than Paihia as a base?

Waterfront Suites are very good. To be honest, most of the accommodation in central Paihia is a little soulless, so thats just what it is like in Paihia.

The Qualmark question is not relevant. I could go into a long explanation on Qualmark, but basically you should not worry at all if a place is not qualmarked.

Crows Nest is excellent & with great views - not walking distance from Paihia really, but still close by.

I would however recommend staying in Russell over Paihia, and just taslking the quick passenger ferry over to Paihia

you want a good pool? try Copthorne Resort Bay of Islands. Their pool is great (especially for kids). Resort is a bit further from Paihia though but they provide a complimentary shuttle. We love the location of the hotel. (quiet)

Right on the waterfront at Russell is Commodores Lodge motel very nice place, nice manager, their units sleep up to 6, solar heated pool, childrens pool, bikes, kayaks and dinghy available. I agree with Lupton regarding qualmark- ignore it!!

I have stayed in some 5 star qulamarks that I would never go back to, so I have no faith in their system at all.

Small unique and personal places will mostly not be qualmark rated, because we choose not to be.
