Driving from Rotorua to Taupo

Hi there

We are about to make out fist trip to New Zealand.

I hope someone can help please :)

We need to know what the most interesting and scenic way is to get to Taupo from Rotorua.

We will have our own car and timings not a huge issue.

Is it best to go via Upper Atiamuri or to go via Golden springs?

thank you so much

Definitely SH5 which passes through Golden Springs(which is no more than a camp ground and a few houses; blink & you'll miss it) Upper Atiamuri is mostly pasture & dairy farms.

I'd have to say that neither are especially "scenic", but on SH5 there is plenty of places to visit along the way.

Some of the attractions en route to Taupo via Golden Springs. Some require a short detour.

Rainbow Mountain

Waimungu Thermal Valley

Waiotapu Thermal Valley (be there before 10.15 a.m. to view daily geyser display)

Waikite Thermal Pools

Riverjet trip to Orakei Korako Thermal Valley or the Squeeze ( near Golden Springs)

Aratiatia Rapids ( view 10 a.m. 12 noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m)

Prawn Farm

Volcano Centre

Honey Hive

Adventure Park

Craters of the Moon

Huka Falls

Google individual attractions to find out more about them. www.rotoruaNZ.com will also help with planning how to spend time in and around Rotorua.

Have a fun time!
