North Island in a few days

We are spending 10 days touring the South Island and are looking to spend about four days in the north. We have put together a rough itinerary and want to know if it is realistic, since I tend to pack too much into a trip (from desk research). We decided to go south from Auckland, rather than to Waipoua Forest and Bay of Islands...

Day 1 Auckland - ferry to Rangitoto Island, tour city

Day 2 Drive to Rotorua - see Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach & Mt Maunganui on the way

Day 3 Rotorua - thermal areas and Maori culture/Hangi

Day 4 Drive back to Auckland via Waitomo - Marokopa Falls, etc., do caves?(we will have seen glowworms in Te Anau)

Take late evening flight from Auckland.

Is this realistic?

If you have seen glow worms at Te Anau you could give Waitomo a miss and either spend a little more time in Rotorua or even continue on to Taupo and return to AKL straight up SH1. If you like gardens do visit Hamilton Gardens. They are amazing.

Day 2 could be a long day and it would be a waste of time to drive all the way to Hot Water Beach for a very short time if the tide is wrong.

I think trying to squeeze the Coromandel into your itinerary is not allowing enough time to enjoy your drive to Rotorua. Waihi is worthwhile stopping to view the open cast gold mine and Waihi Beach is a good spot for a swim.

Mt Maunganui is worth spending at least two hours for a swim, either in the surf or in the salt water pools. A walk around the Mount is also a good way to get some exercise and a break from driving.

You will find there is so much to do/see in and around Rotorua you could spend a week and still not get to see and do all the attractions. Kuirau Park (free), St Faith's Church at Ohinemutu, the Rotorua museum are all worth visiting.

You would want to allow 1/2 a day for Cathedral Cove given that it is a 1 1/2 round trip walking from the car park.

And Hot water beach is only hot at certain limited hours of the day. Please see the attached website for tide info.

I think you are cramming too much into day 2 considering you are also driving between Auckland and Rotorua.

Driving and doing one of those of the list would be enough, not all.
