Kuirau Park; the mudpool area outside Waiotapu; but the colours and actions are not nearly as awesome as those at Waiotapu, Waimungu, Orakei Korako etc.

These do have a charge as paths and tracks need to be maintained. The maintenance of Kuirau Park is paid for by the ratepayer. Also the Rachel Spring near the Blue Baths in the Government Gardens is a free to view thermal spring. There are also walks but check these out with the I site.

I'm reading Scott Cook's New Zealand Frenzy books and he lists tons of free places to see at no cost. He lists free to access mud pools, waterfalls, etc that are off the beaten path and free.

There are a few free things in Rotorua. Firstly as previously mentioned Kuirau park, it is centrally located and has mud, steam etc. close by is Ohinemutu Maori village, the church is fabulous and you can see some Maori buildings etc and how the thermal activity is used for cooking, heating etc.

The Government gardens and bath house in town are great also and the Redwood forest and Blue and Green lakes aren't too far a drive out of town.

Also on the road to Waimangu there are some really good free mud pools and further down the road is a thermal pool that you can bathe ( not swim ) in, please don't ignore the signs warning you not to put your head under.

Hi, I suggest walking around Lake Rotorua, from the playground all the way round to the museum. When you come to the museum, there are the Government Gardens, which also have some geothermic attractions. You can download walking guides from www.rotoruanz.com/experiences/walking.php
