day trip to waitimo caves

We are hoping to spend 4 nights in Taupo next March. We are planning to spend one day in the Tongariro area - possibly including a flight over the volcanoes ( are there any reputable companies offering flights?). We also wish to visit the Waitomo caves and it seems that the only opportunity we will have is to go while we are staying in Taupo. Is this too big a day trip from Taupo? We will have our own vehicle.

Depends on what you wish to do at Waitomo. Are you visiting Auckland??? If so better to go to Waitomo either to or from Taupo.

After visiting the Bay of Islands we will be coming from north of Auckland, The Coromandel Peninsula and Rotorua to Taupo and leaving via Napier and Martinborough before flying home from Wellington.

That explains things, you will have to do a day trip from Rotorua or Taupo, unless Zappers has some other suggestions as to how to get from Coromandel to Taupo via Waitomo. Too big a drive in one day.

Calicolodge- just to clarify - we will not be travelling from north of Auckland (Orewa) to Taupo via the Coromandel in one day. We shall be spending 2 nights in the Coromandel and one in Rotorua before arriving in Taupo. We will also be stopping overnight in Napier and Martinborough before Wellington.

Rabbit, yes it's easy to do a day trip from Taupo to Waitomo, it's 2 hrs each way. Allow a full day though and it could be a full on day depending on which caving experience you're planning on doing.

The other option you could do is travel to Waitomo when you leave Rotorua and then onto Taupo after the caves. This would be a 4 hour trip(2hrs each leg) plus the time you spend at Waitomo. You may be thinking of doing one of the geothermal parks south of Rotorua on your way to Taupo. You could save these to do as a trip from Taupo, the furtherest one would be 30minutes drive from Taupo.

Thanks Calicolodge and Zappers it's hard to plan when you just have a map and a computer in front of you. I think we might try the round trip from Rotoua to Taupo via the caves. You were right Zappers we were planning to visit the geothermal attractions on our way to Taupo but we can do that from Taupo. Any suggestions for flight operators in the Tongariro area I have seen Mountain Air on the internet and wondered if they are reputable

Sorry rabbit I have no experience with the flight companies. Mountain Air look fine and they look like having the added benefit of being local to the mountains- more driving for you but then you'll probably wnt to visit the Mt Ruapehu by vehicle anyway.

Taupo airport will also have operators that do scenic tours of the mountains.

Hi rabbit59. You could drive to Waitomo when you leave Rotorua, then down to Taupo. Many people take this route to fit it in. It is possible to do Waitomo while you are in Taupo, but it would be more interesting from Rotorua as you are not driving the same road twice. Easy to do in a day.

With your flight over the Volcanoes, I would suggest you consider the float plane that leaves from Taupo Boat Harbour. The owners name is Neil. A great guy doing a really good service. The float plane will go any time that suits you, but mornings or late afternoon are best for photo's. Website is www.taupofloatplane.co.nz
