Suggestions where to stay at Mt Ruapehu late June

Hi, We are looking to spend two days on or near Mt Ruapehu. Have two kids aged 8/9 and want to spend two days playing in the snow, maybe having a go at skiiing (did it last year here in Aus but unfortunately virtually no snow that time). We are on a moderate budget - NZD150/night or less and are not sure where to stay. Assume you get more choices in Taupo so that could be an idea but also had visions or staying somewhere in the snow where we could wander outside and have snowball fights etc. Is there such accommodation, and is it do-able on our budget? Generally we go for self-catering accommodation. Thanks

I doubt there will be anywhere near the snow within that budget for a family. Try Skotel:

However NZ doesn't really have on-snow accommodation except for private clubs. There are environmental issues with disposal of waste and supply of services in the National Park, so most of the accommodation is down the Mountain eg at the town of National Park.

Hi

With your two children I would be inclined to go for the Taupo option - more choice, will be less expensive and more to do for the childen.

You may wish to consider De Bretts

Nice hot pools to relax in at the end of the day.

For a budget option you may also wish to take a look at Rainbow Lodge

Backpackers but has rooms with ensuite,

Thanks for your advice - will definitely do Taupo and will look at your recommendations. Thanks again - tend to get a bit bogged down when looking at accommodation/sights etc in this great country - where to stop - when to come back again and see all the wonderful places I've read about and can't fit into this visit!!
