Wellington and beyond - in october

Hi,

I will be in Wellington next week for 5 days with a friend. Any suggestions on sights , cafes, recommended restaurants etc?

We will then travel 5 days with a hire car. Haven't planned anything yet - east or west coast? Martinborough?

thanks.

If you are wanting to see some of the country you could do a loop. Go up one side and back the other crossing over through the Manawatu gorge.

There are a lot of great wineries in Martinborough, that you may enjoy. You could also head up to the Hawkes Bay (Napier/Hastings) for a couple of days and visit the wineries there too.

You can easily do a loop drive as the previous person mentioned. So these ideas below can be done in either direction.

You could depart Wellington via Martinborough and Greytown as first stop... do some wine tours and maybe stay a night if you are really into small rural wine regions... some lovely cottages for rent in that region called the Wairarapa. Try websites like www.bluecastle.co.nz or placestostay.co.nz or travelbug.co.nz

There are also nice cafes and restaurants in the area.

Then head to the Hawkes Bay region - it is on the coast so lovely scenary. You could drive up Te Mata Peak and view the plains - the area is covered in vineyards and Napier is the bigger of the local towns if you want a few shops as well - else I recommend staying perhaos in Havelock North nearby for smaller town, with boutique shops and nice places to eat and great cafes. There are lovely seaside bachs and winerys near at Clifton, Te Awanga as well. And a Ganet Colony bird trip you can do to Cape Kidnappers could be fun, in jeeps.

If you are not that into wineries you could also just drive through and not stay longer and then go to the central North Island, Lake Taupo region is nice area, there is some amazing thermal areas nearby (boiling mud and geyers and steam coming out of the ground) and a gorgeous River with Huka Falls. There is a road back towards the Wellington area called the Desert Road State Highway 1, and that goes across the volcanic plateau, so you get to see the ski field mountains and it's very beautiful scenary.

You could head back to the Wellington end of the North Island via the Kapiti Coast... coastal scenary.

If you're into it you could take a fishing tour from Mana near Wellington on the Kapiti Coast - http://www.petelambfishing.co.nz/

Lots to do!

Have fun

In Wellington don't miss our national museum, Te Papa; the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and a drive around the rugged coast south of the airport. A trip up Mt Victoria will show you some LOTR sites.
