Not much vacancy on February 4th? What's happening?

We are looking for a hotel or vacation rental for one night on the 4th of Feb. 2011. We will be taking the 8:25am ferry to the south island on the 5th. I found some vacation rentals, but they are not in the downtown. Can someone give me an idea of the neighborhoods and which ones would be close to downtown and easy access to the ferry. Also, does anyone have any experience with car rentals that say you will leave your rental on the north and pick one up on the south?

Thanks for your help!

What's happening on 4 February is the NZI Sevens rugby tournament (see http://www.nzisevens.co.nz/) which is a huge event on Wellington's tourism calendar. The stadium is close to the ferry port, so all hotels close by are likely to be booked solid. You may have to look a bit further away than you'd really like to, but if you've got a car with you, that won't matter. Wellington is not a large city, so you won't have a huge drive. One possibility you could look at is the Capital Gateway Motel at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge. This is on the main road into the city, so it would be easy to find, and it is a few minutes drive to the ferry.

Huge is probably understating it! It's probably one of the biggest sporting events in NZ, let alone Wellington!

Check with the rental company. It will probably be cheaper to leave yours in Wellington and pick up a new one in Picton.

Taking a vehicle on the ferry can be expensive... You're better off pre booking another one for pickup at the ferry terminal in Picton.

Safe travels.

You could try looking at 'Trade Me' website under 'Holiday Houses' but you'll have to be quick

Just checking on wotif.com for you there are a few rooms left but not cheap.

And you better be quick!

How about this B&B which is very near both of the ferry terminals in the inner city suburb of Thorndon: 'Wellington Bed and Breakfast - Hobson Street. www.wotif.com/hotel/View…

International Rugby Sevens on 4th and 5th so an extra 40000 people in the City. Try finding somewhere out of the city maybe.
