New Zealand for about 12 days

Hi guys, my husband and I are planning a trip to both North and South Islands. After reading some of the forums, I am not sure that a campervan would be the most economical or secure (for our valuables?) option. It just sounded like so much fun!

Can we access national parks in a motorhome/campervan?

Any suggested itineraries would be appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum :)

You can access the national parks by campervan, car, truck, moped, bike - if there is a road it is accessible. However that doesn't mean you are able to necessarily overnight in national parks - camping is very restricted and there is a $200 fine for illegal camping. DOC has some camps in stunning locations, the rest of the time use commercial campsites, some of which are also in stunning locations http://www.camping.org.nz/

It takes a minimum of 3 weeks to visit the main sights of both islands - you will be very rushed with just 12 days - plus a campervan drives about 20% slower than car travel.

Suggestion - increase your time here or stay on just one island or rent a car and do a rushed trip through both islands.

There are many 12 day itineraries posted here on the forum, take a look at them to see the possibilities... and the limitations.

Happy planning :)
