Traveling from Wellington to Auckland via west coast

Is there any must see along the way we will be stopping at least 1 night if not 2 so pretty open on how long it takes.

Wanted to get away from the usual drive straight through so happy to stop at a local bar even :)

Thanks for your help.

The bigger sights along the way are:

Kapiti Island trip: http://www.kapitiislandnaturetours.co.nz/

Whanganui River: http://www.whanganuiriver.co.nz/operators

Taranaki (good hiking) …govt.nz/by-region/…

Waitomo

There are plenty of smaller quirky places too.

If you are travelling through Hawera when the Tawhiti Museum is open, it is well worth a visit. www.tawhitimuseum.co.nz

All the beaches along the way are fantastic. Otaki, Foxton, Opunake. Bulls is a quirky little town with it's funny signs. The Bridge to Nowhere up the Whanganui River is a great trip if you have time to fit it in. Wanganui itself is a gorgeous town, especially between December and March when the Wanganui in Bloom is on. Also Cape Egmont lighthouse is worth a visit with stunning Mt Taranaki as a backdrop, if the weather is kind.

Stop off at Mokau for some whitebait fritters. At Waitomo, take some time to do some of the walks in the area, especially to the Mangahopue natural bridge, then follow the road to the coast and visit Marokopa Falls, best waterfall in NZ in my humble opinion.
