FYI: Significant earthquakes central NZ today.

There was a severe earthquake centred near Seddon (adjacent to Blenheim) at 1631 this afternoon, the 16th, of ~6.6 magnitude. PGA at the site 0.75. Significant damage to local structures. Only minor damage reported (so far) in the nearby larger city of Wellington.

Numerous strong to severe aftershocks throughout the afternoon. geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/wellington/felt

Aftershocks expected to continue, with an estimated ~30% chance (based statistically) of another severe shake within the next 24 hours.

Just a heads-up to anyone visiting.

The city council has advised that the city is open for business again today (Saturday), with one or two small cordoned off areas. All public facilities and public transport are open. I for one will be heading into town to try out a Wellington on a Plate lunch offering somewhere, and maybe popping into the big City Mission fundraising book sale (if I am allowed!)

Judging by the amount of minor damage at our workplace, that quake was not as strongly felt in Wellington as the July one. Travellers intending to go to Marlborough in the next few days, perhaps as a day trip from Wellington, may want to check in with the local council (http://www.marlborough.govt.nz/) as the quake has caused more damage and disruption there.
