Cristchurch to Greymouth

Hi all,

We will be arriving in Christchurch on 18th September and have the afternoon free. The next day we will travel to Greymouth. We cannot decide wether to travel on the Tranz Alpine Railway or go by Car?

Lindy, your logistics will probably be the major determining factor here. However, if you have the opportunity, I would recommend you take the train.

Hi Lindy

You'll love the train... actually you'll love the drive too, but the train is more relaxing :)

You can arrange to have your rental car waiting for you at Greymouth station.

For some idea of what the road option looks like check my photos on my profile

also just uploaded more photos to

To train one way, stay the night on the coast to see punakaiki or glaciers then to travel back by road back is an excellent option giving you the best of both worlds

Thanks everyone, seems the train is the option, as we will collect the car from Greymouth, and stay overnight, then on Fox Glacier the next day, followed by Queenstown the next day. Hope this is achieveable after seeing the photo's.

the train is OK but boy do you miss the best bits for an Aussie.....stop on the way up the valley for a meal at the pub....see all the wierd rocks....go into Arthurs Pass .....go over the most spectacular road to Otira (the train goes thru the Mt and misses everything).

i have done this a few times and would always say that the train is the way of the lazy tourist not willing to interact......road at least once to get the feel and gain the good stopins at selected places the tranz Alp is always there someother time.

Hi LindyAussie

Go with the train - a friend went last weekend and said it was the best trip she has ever done. We have had massive snow dumps up in the Southern Alps this winter and it is a winter wonder land up there. While it is still about 3-4 week before you come and the snow around places like Arthurs Pass will probably be gone - the mountians should still be great. By train you can sit back and relax and enjoy the views.

cheers
