Help need with Feb itineary

Hi all, I need some advice with our itinerary for our visit to NZ next month.

We have 12 nights and so far we fly into Auckland 12th Feb and overnight there before flying to Queenstown. We stay in Queenstown for 2 nights, then 1 night at Milford Sound. That leaves us 8 nights to make our way back to Auckland and we need some help with this. We are mainly interested in wine/dining and beautiful scenery etc, dont want to hike or rough it!

Any suggestions woul be most appreciated!

Thanks

If you plan to return to Auckland by road then 8 nights is pretty tight but feasible if you don't mind a lot of driving.

After your night in Milford Sound you could drive to Wanaka for a night, then travel up the South Island's West Coast which is one of the most scenic highway's in the world.

Spend a night at the Glaciers, either Fox or Franz and then a night a bit further north at Punakaiki.

Those 3 nights will take care of the spectacular scenery plus give you the chance to walk on a glacier.

Next stop should be Blenheim which is the heart of the Marlborough wine region, our most famous wine area.

From Blenheim you'll need to cross on the ferry to Wellington for a night and then drive up the centre of the North Island passing through Rotorua for amazing geothermal scenery. Spend the last night in Akl before flying home. The above gives you one spare night where you can do a 2 night stop but I'm at a loss to tell you where to do this as my little itinerary above is at a frantic pace, best bet for two nights would be either Blenheim or Rotorua I think.

There are 100's of ideas we could put your way but the above in a rather rushed way gives you some real highlights and matches your requirements. Just be prepared for spending long hours behind the wheel.

Enjoy the trip.

You could fly in and out of Queenstown to Milford Sound you can still take the boat trip. The west coast of the south island is spectacular but it has been very wet over the past few weeks. Nelson and Motueka are beautiful. Picton is pretty forgetable so perhaps a flight from Nelson to Welllington. The website www.airnewzealand.co.nz has some regular specials that you could take advantage of.

That way you could spend premium time in places and then amble back to Auckland via the east coast taking in Napier Tauranga and through to Auckland. I know its probably more expensive to fly but 12 nights probably needs a good plan.

Enjoy and hope the weather smiles upon you. Ka Kite,

It looks fantastic and you are really getting through to the best bits....... I am from Christchurch and while its a city you would probably enjoy akaroa so much. The Blenheim wineries are def worth visiting.

Enjoy and have fun.

Twizel can be a bit dreary, although it has 1 good restaurant, Poppies. It's also a long drive from Milford, bordering on the unsafe. You could stop in Cromwell. (some nice wineries) You would have a slightly longer drive to Akaroa the next day but if you bi-pass Christchurch and cut through Lincoln it is do-able.

Hi Fasta

As Mike mentioned, your drive Milford to Twizel is overlong, about 7 hours. And the first 2 hours you will be on the Milford Road which has an alrming number of tourist accidents. So many in fact that Transit is considering banning all rental cars from the road.

A suggestion; take the bus to Milford from Queenstown, enjoy the cruise and then fly back to Queenstown. This trip take just 9 hours and is stunning. You get the best of everything, by land, by sea, by air. This would give you three full days based in Queenstown. I suggest that when you arrive in Quenstown, select the best weather day for Milford. The fiord is spectacular in the rain however the flight out would be cancelled.

It would be better to stay at Tekapo rather than Twizel.

You trip would then become;

1 Auckland (fly to Queenstown)

2 Queenstown

3 Queenstown

4 Queenstown

5 drive to Tekapo

6 drive Akaroa

7 drive to Blenheim...

just a suggestion :)

If you are on a fishing trip Twizel is great, or if you have a boat it's also fine. The only problem with Tekapo is that it's another 45 minutes. If you are starting from Queenstown or Cromwell I would concider Aoraki MT Cook, also 45 minutes from Twizel. It's a bit more expensive but the view of the mountain first thing in the morning is quite special and the best chance of a clear view is in the morning. Your chances of mistakes in a drive from Milford to Twizel are quite high! It will be patches of boring, intermingled with quite taxing. The places you are visiting (except Twizel -worse than Sydney on a Sunday) are really brilliant.

We are doing 3 nights in Queenstown, 1 of them is with Real Journeys staying overnight at Milford Sounds doing coach in and flying back to Queenstown. We are really only staying in Twizel as way to break our journey and have an overnight stay on our way to Akaroa and already have a booking at Poppies for dinner, unless someone can suggest a better route between Q'town and Akaroa?
