We are flying into christchurch... onto queenstown for 4 nights and then up to franz joseph for 1 night. Wondering what would be most scenic route to take to picton. Have 2 1/2 days.

Hi needahOl,

Follow Hwy 6 along the Buller River. Gorgeous drive. Stop off at Buller Gorge & cross the longest swing bridge in NZ and do some of the nature walks. (Take plenty of insect repellent). Stop off at Murchison & check out the museum and perhaps do some white water rafting. If time allows, take a side trip to Maruia Falls created by a massive earthquake in 1929 that destroyed the town. Follow Hwy 6 then 63 to St Arnaud on Lake Rotoiti. Beautiful scenic lake and lots of walks. From there you can either stay on H63 following the Wairau River, or head towards Nelson and go to Picton that way. This goes through some beautiful scenic areas including the Rai Valley, Pelorus Bridge Reserve and of course Havelock, home of the delicious NZ Green lipped mussels, finishing with a last stretch along Queen Charlotte drive on the approach to Picton. You'll need to stop overnight at a couple of places to get the most out of this trip. Get a map & plot the route then choose some places for accommodation along the way. Hope that helps :)

Try to spend a wee bit of time in Franz Joseph whilst there, rather than just a whistle stop tour. if you lack time, do either a heli tour of the glacier, or a heli hike. sometimes the heli tour will be at the same time as some people doing the heli hike, which means you will land on the ice, but probably not get out, then you will continue the tour.

Take the road to Hokitika, then on the Greymouth then to Punakakiki, then to Westport, then up the Buller river throught to Murchison, then to a turn off at Kawatiri (well sign posted) then on to Blenheim and Picton.

Spend some time in Hokitika for greensone, gold and Glass blowing and dont forget the sock museum.
