Advice needed on my South Island Trip

Hey guys,

I'm planning to visit south island for bout' 11 days in mid-late may.

1.) Could you please comment on my itinerary? Cheers.

Day 1 - Christchurch

Day 2 - En route to Fox Glacier

Day 3 - [Fox Glacier trek] - en route to Wanaka

Day 4 - En route to Queenstown

Day 5 - [Milford Sound Cruise]

Day 6 - Queenstown

Day 7 - Queenstown

Day 8 - En route to Tekapo - [Alpine Springs] [Observatory Night Tour]

Day 9 - [En route to Rangitata Rafts] - Christchurch

Day 10 - Christchurch

Day 11 - Departure

2.) Should I drive to Milford sound from Te Anau or take the coach from Queenstown?

3.) If I take the coach, Naked Bus or BBQ Bus?

4.) Jucy or Apex car rental?

Thanks all. Much appreciated.

hi,

the itinerary looks good

I would tend to take a coach from TeAnau rather than the rather long day trip from Queenstown, that way you have the opportunity to explore TeAnau and Manapouri and do the glow worm caves tour by boat in the evening from TeAnau. It will be mre relaxed for you too. I would tend to drive Wanaka to TeAnau rather than over night in Qt then spend time in QT after milford sound etc

Allow a full day in Fox to hike the glacier. The weather is often damp on the West Coast and this allows more time if needed, for rain delays. Allow a minimum of 5 hours to drive Fox to Wanaka - there are some great short walks to enjoy along Haast Pass.

You could;

1 arrive Chch

2 drive to Fox

3 hike, explore glaciers

4 drive to Wanaka :)

5 drive to Te Anau, glow worm caves

6 explore Milford, stay Te Anau

7 drive to Queenstown

8 explore

9 drive to Tekapo

10 Rangitata Rafts, drive to Chch

11 fly home

Jucy or Apex? Apex

hope this helps

Hi kmliew

Your itinerary looks good. In my opinion Queenstown is the ideal base for your short 10 day visit. There is much more to explore in the Queenstown area and doing the coach trip from Queenstown creates the option of flying out of Milford Sound if the weather permits. If you can afford it coach, cruise, fly is the ultimate way to experience the area and that option is best from Queenstown rather than Te Anau.

If you are visiting Milford Sound for the first time take the coach. Naked Bus and BBQ Bus are both excellent trips and their drivers are rated very highly. Naked Bus uses a large luxury glass roof coach and BBQ bus have a smaller 20 seater type bus and provide a BBQ. Both of these companies make more stops on the Milford road then the other operators so in my opinion you can't go wrong with whoever you choose.

Jucy or Apex? Again both of these companies provide excellent service.

It looks good, if you get the chance visit Akaroa in Christchurch, just a day trip.Make sure you get the great fish and chips on the harbour!

Thanks guys. Initially I wanted to spend a night in Te Anau but I've been to glow worms caves before many times in OZ. What else is interesting over there? Or should I skip Wanaka instead?

Don't skip either.... unless you want to do Milford as a day trip from Queenstown? Which makes for a long day, being a 13 hour trip by bus.

My preference is to use Te Anau as a base to visit Milford.

You learn something new every day on TA! I didn't know there were glow worms in Aust - don't know why I thought they were unique to NZ!! Where are the caves in OZ?

Thanks again. I wanted to use Queenstown as a base cause I can return the rental car and save some cash. I thought the coach idea might be better off.

Yeah, gold coast has 2 glow worms caves. They are pretty decent.

Oh, I forgot to ask, when and where would be a good place to explore snowy ski mountains? I dont ski but wanted to have a days trip or few hours.

To play on the ski slopes you will need to return in July, August or Sept. No skiing in May :)

Ar I see...how is the weather over there? I have my dates set for 11/5 or 1/6 due to work commitments. Brisbane's too hot right now.
