Dear helpful people,
We (2 couples) will be spending 10 days visiting south island at the end of August/early Sept and need comments on the following:
(1) We plan to hire a car for this entire trip - is this the most cost-effective way? Will there still be ice on the road in the early morning
? Advisable to drive at night?
(2) Our itinerary after reading this forum, we welcome comments please ;)
Day 1 - Arrive CHC airport in the afternoon, pick up car at the airport and drive to Blenheim
Day 2 - Explore Blenheim- Picton-Nelson, drive to Punakaiki
Day 3 - Explore Punaikaki-Greymouth-Hokitika-Franz Josef (just take a look, not intending to take the glacier walk, or should we skip it?) then drive to Haast
Day 4 - Explore Haast-Wanaka, drive to Queenstown
Day 5 - Explore Queenstown and surrounding
Day 6 - Drive to Te Anau, Milford Sound cruise
Day 7 - Drive to Dunedin, explore Dunedin
Day 8 - Drive to Mt Cook, explore Mt. Cook
Day 9 - Explore Mt Cook-Lake Tekapo then drive to CHC
Day 10 - Explore CHC, then drive to airport
Thank you very much!!
