Best roadside Cafes

Hi there,

we loved some of the roadside cafes we stopped by during our last visit. Now we are doing different routes and I'd like to know your recommendations where stop for a coffee and more.

We will drive from

Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo to Queenstown

Queenstown to Wanaka (OK, no stop needed here)

Wanaka to Dunedin

Dunedin to ChCh via Oamaru

Any recommendations?

Mundines (the big place) or Station Inn in Geraldine, The Old Libruary in Failey, poppies in twizel, Wrinkley Ram in Omarama, Riverside just North of waitaki Bridge, Bakers on HW1 just South of Timaru, Robert Harris in Ashburton. salmon Tails in Rakia.

My colleagues and I travel these roads regularly, and these are all "office favourites'. Clean Loos, good coffee and a selection fresh food. If you are in a hurry, the "Maccas" all have good coffee and clean toilets.

Also at Fairlie, the Farm Barn, on a hill just north of town and near the Moeraki Boulders, between Dunedin &Oamaru, Fleur's.

If you like salmon&sashimi don't miss the salmon farms along the canals between Tekapo & Twizel - it doesn't come much fresher than that!

There is no chance of you being stuck for a coffee and nibble. Zhuhai mentions the salmon. The fish in those hydro canals have to swim quite fast, so they produce the leanest salmon on the market. It is very high quality!

Hi everybody,

thanks again for the advice, we checked a few of them out and were happy with all of them. The Farm Barn was especially nice because of the food! And we loved Poppies!

if taking the Crown Range from Q'town to Wanaka stop at the Cardrona Hotel - it isn't a cafe but does do lunch (and dinner).
