"Can't Miss" Restaurants on the South Island

Hi Everyone,

My wife and I will be on the South Island April 1st - 15th and would love if you could provide us with some recommendations for restaurants or cafes that we should not miss. 2 notes: We are not really into Fine dining and sadly we do not eat seafood. Other than that we'd really appreciate your recommendations. (I know most of this can be found on TA, but wanted to open it up to the forum)

Some of the places we'll be are: Picton, Nelson, Collingwood, Kaikoura, Akaroa, Mt. Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wanaka, and Hokitika.

Thanks for your help!!

In Queenstown we went to (in order of preference):

(1) Finz. On water, great ambiance, I think they may have meat as well as fish! We went twice since we had a "bonus night" due to cancelled flight.

(2) Bella Cucina. Small, lively, Italian food.

(3) Botswana Butchery. GO IN WANAKA!!! Service bad in Q'town although food good. But for the price, bad service is a MISS.

In Wanaka, we went to (in order of preference::

(1) Botswana Butchery. Good service and good food!

(2) The Cow

(3) Alivate is nice for lunch or drinks since it has a great view.

Hi,

We have been amazed that during our visits to NZ we have yet to be dissapointed by any of the restaurants we have visited. Given "oldtimers" I can't remember them all but some of our standouts in Queenstown are:

Skyline at the top of the gondola - great smorgasboard and the best views.

Sombreros - Mexican cuisine with fantastic array of HOT!!!!! sauces.

Flame Bar & Grill

Enjoy,

Actually, i forgot to mention Fergburgers! We went there after a long day...burger was NOT greasy at all and quite tasty! For $10 not a bad choice at all.

Zhuhai mentioned my favourites....on the way to anywhere.

Try Naked possum up Valley from Collingwood.

Good coffees and tasty fare at Morrison cafe in Hardy St Nelson.

Waimea Winery

Mapua Smokehouse

as has been said before the average place in the South Island is a good as anything you will get in Europe.....even if they copied it.

We enjoyed Red Star Burgers in Wanaka. Great food and far fewer people than Fergburger in Queenstown.

On your way out to Milford, stop at Miles Better Pies in Te Anau. You can grab a pie and sit outside by the lake. We ate here several times during our trip.
