Welcome to the forum M :)

Just one tweak to your trip - Tekapo to Te Anau is a long drive - better to break the trip in Queenstown.

When are you arriving in NZ? If you arrive on the 6th you are best to spend the first night in Chch - driving jet lagged is the same as driving drunk - it kills.

So assuming you arrive in NZ before the 6th - here's what I suggest;

6 drive to Tekapo

7 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

8 explore

9 drive Lindis Pass to Queenstown - glorious drive

10 explore

11drive to Te Anau

12 explore Milford, stay Te Anau

13 drive to Wanaka

14 explore...

and if you arrive in NZ on the 6th then;

6 arrive Chch

7 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

8 explore

9 drive to Queenstown...

hope this helps :)

Or perhaps, Mt Cook to Wanaka, then Wanaka to Te Anau, then Te Anau to Queenstown, then Queenstown to Franz Josef...

The longest drive day would be Queenstown to Franz Josef, which is certainly doable.

Thank you WanakaLakes and Melnq8 for your replies!

I am flying from tokyo to Christchurch and arriving on the 6 th of February. So it is indeed a good idea to rest in CHC for one day and then driving to Lake Tekapo.

I think I will break my trip up in Queenstown!

Is February a busy period, do I need to book accomodation in advance?

Appreciate your help

February is peak tourist seaosn, although the kids go back to school approx 7 Feb. I hope you know that 6 Feb is our National Day Holiday!! You would absolutley need to prebook the rental car and the first night in Chch as accommodation is in very short supply.
