Help me plain South Island trip from boxing day to 11 jan

I have a friend coming to visit from the UK, he arrives at Chch (where I live) on the 26th and departs on the 11th of jan.

I want to spend New years in Queenstown. Other must do's is whale watching tour in kakoura, hamner springs, Mt cook, Milford sounds, Dunedin (see penguins and albatrosses), banks Peninsula. He also like sea fishing, im not a fisherman so wouldn't know where to go for that and there's a glow worm cave i heard good things about.

Any recommendation welcome and appreciate, interested in wild life eating/drinking, adventure but not too much hiking/walking.

Thanks.

Sarah, the iSite in the Botanic Gardens is a good place to start.

Do you have a car? What about budget?

You coukd start by heading down the West Coast & returning via Mt Cook. Remember it will be peak time so you'll need to book accommodation, esp in QTN.

26. Arrive, relax

27. Drive to FJG (2N)

28. Explore

29. Drive to Wanaka (1-2N)

30. Explore

31. Drive to QTN (2-3N)

2. Drive to Te Anau (2N) glowworm caves

3. Milford Sound

4. Drive to Dunedin (2N)

5. Otago Peninsula ( Elm Wildlife tour)

6. Dunedin to Mt Cook

7. Mt Cook to Christchurch

8. Chch to Kaikoura

9. Whale-watch; drive to Hanmer Springs

10. Hanmer Springs to Chch.

It is possible to do Chch to Kaikoura & back in 2 days with just a lunch/swim stop in Hanmer Springs. That would free up a day for a trip to Akaroa where you could go fishing.

Hi thanks for you're ideas, i have book Queenstown for 3 nights from the 30th-1st. budget average, not luxury, nor backpacker. have a small 4x4 also a little car

I was thinking maybe something like this any adjustments welcome. what does FJG stand for. thanks.

26. Arrive - I live here so dont need to relax ;)

27. Drive to Kaikoura

28. Whale trip/ Hamner springs spend night in chch

29. drive to queenstown (3N)

2. Te anau

3. Milford sound (cruse)/ Te anau

4. Dunedin(2N) Albatrosses, penguins

6. Chch/ Akaroa

7. Athurs pass to Graymouth

8.Nelson(2N)

10. chch

Is this too much driving/ not enough time exploring. NZ is once in a life time trip from the UK so i want fit the most possible in.

In your initial post, you mentioned Mt Cook and didn't mention Nelson, so I'd suggest this itinerary:

Dec 27: Drive to Franz Josef via Arthur's Pass

Dec 28: Heli-hike on Franz or Fox & walk Lake Matheson OR drive to Wanaka

Dec 29: Drive to Queenstown (3 nights)

Jan 2: Drive to Dunedin (2 nights)

Jan 4: Drive to Te Anau

Jan 5: Milford Sound cruise; Te Anau

Jan 6: Drive to Mt Cook; stay the night

Jan 7: Drive to Christchurch via the Scenic Inland Route

Jan 8: Drive to Kaikoura; stay the night

Jan 9: Whale watch; Hanmer Springs; Christchurch

Jan 10: Day trip to Akaroa

This involves some long drives, but the days are long in Dec/Jan and you'd get to do what you originally planned. I'm sure you'll find plenty to do in Queenstown - drive to Glenorchy; do the Dart River Jet Boat Safari; visit Arrowtown; watch the bungy jumping; go on the Gondola and Luge, etc.

Your friend is really lucky. ;)

You said your booking for QTN is 30th - 2nd. Where are you staying on the night of the 29th? If not FJG then you look as if you are driving the inland route (SH8) twice!!

Ah, there's 31 days in December, which gives you an extra day - I'd say drive to Wanaka on 29 Dec and stay two nights at Franz Josef (27-28 Dec).

Suzanne :)

Edit: Or, if you stick to your original itinerary, you could stay at Mt Cook on 29 Dec, which will break the journey from Christchurch to Queenstown. (Maybe that's what you intended to write.)

Zhuhai,

Isn't the most direct (and quickest) route from Dunedin to Christchurch the SH1? Wouldn't that be the road they'd take on 6 Jan from Dunedin to Christchurch (even if it's "boring")?

Suzanne :)
