Welcome to the Kiwi forum :)

How committed are you to staying twice in Queenstown? Plus how old are you kids? Driving Te Anau to Milford (2.5 hours), cruise (3 hours) back to Queenstown 4.5 hours non-stop makes for a very long day with young kids.

My suggestion;

13 fly to Queenstown

14 explore

15 afternoon drive to Te Anau - glow worm caves?

16 explore Milford, stay Te Anau

17 drive to Wanaka

18 drive Lindis Pass to Tekapo - stunning drive

19 drive to Chch, fly out

car rental - Apex

accommodation - hotel, motel, apartment, B&B, lodge? Luxury or budget?

check www.wotif.com for good variety of discounted accommodation.

Hope this helps :)

I haven't stayed in any Queenstown accommodation so can't make a personal recommendation. Taking a stab in the dark - how about this? - www.wotif.com/hotel/View…

though the latest review posted here in TA might make you reconsider.

If wanting to save on accommodation also consider motels - they can offer the same amenities as apartments, just at a more affordable tariff.

Check the wotif listings for more options.

Happy planning :)

I can strongly recommend Breakfree "the Waterfront".

We were really disappointed with Peppers.

The Breakfree is easy access to town, fantastic view of the lake, and not just an upgraded motel. Just ask not to have an apartment above the driveway.

If you can afford it, do the fly, cruise, bus tour to Milford from Queenstown. Worth every cent, and you don't have 7hrs on the bus. The scenery from above in a light plane is awesome, something you'll never forget.

Hi,

I second the Breakfree Waterfront Appartments when staying in Queenstown with family.

A suitable vehicle is going to be a challenge as the children will need a child seat for the four year old and a booster seat for the twelve year old. This occupies the back seat in most vehicles leaving no room for the third adult. In NZ all passengers must be wearing a seat belt and the children in approved seats/boosters when the vehicle is in motion. I think you are going to need a large seadn or small bus to fit the passengers and liggage with comfort.

Cheers,

TomS and Ozrcflyer - the original post was October 2012. Poster has already been to NZ - December 2012. I note they did not do a TA trip report or post any reviews on their trip Downunder....
