We (a couple and our 26 year old son) will be on the South Island in Feb for 9 days, flying into Christchurch and out Queenstown. Our plan is to drive over Arthur's Pass (night 1), down the West Coast (glaciers), east thru Wanaka to Queenstown , Te Anau and Milford Sound. I am having problems finding accommodations in Okarita and am wondering if we are missing much by skipping Okarita and going straight to Franz-J area (night 2). We plan to spend 2 nights later on in Te Anau and take the kayak trip into Milford Sound--we love the outdoors, adventure and wildlife but don't want to miss the really special spots of the South Island. Any suggestions appreciated!
