We'll be driving from Wanaka to Golden Bay and I'd like to break up the driving and check out some interesting sites along the way, seeking out some particularly photogenic places and walks that will stretch us out from the drive. I'd appreciate you comments on this plan -
Day 1: Wanaka to Franz Josef - driving time 3 hours 40 minutes: walk up to the glacier. (On our previous trip we took a helicopter and glacier hike tour)
Day 2: To Punakaiki - driving time is 3 hours - HERE IS THE PUZZLE! Working in specific walks around the tides! To include both of these sites and the required tide timing, do you think 2 nights will be sufficient or do you think it's safer and the area can handle 3 nights? Suggestions of area to choose lodging?
• Motukiekie Beach Walk - MUST BE 1.5-2 hours before low-tide only- is 20km north of Greymouth - it's supposed to be so beautiful that I'd be okay going twice! Read about this in NZ Frenzy by Scott Cook.
• Punakaiki Rocks – MUST BE high tide only – is 45km north of Greymouth
Last travel day: straight drive to Golden Bay, arriving in Takaka area
Thanks bunches - comments and insights are much appreciated!
