Planning our South Island trip

Help!!! We are planning our first visit to New Zealand and need your help. We arrive on the 3rd of February 2014 and leave on the 15th.

We fly into Auckland. This is our itinerary so far.

Feb.4 Explore Aukland

Feb. 5 Waiheke Island

Feb.6 Tiritiri Matani Island

Feb.7 Waitakere Ranges

Feb.8 Train to Wellington

Feb. 9 Explore Wellington

Feb.10 fly to Christchurch

Now comes our difficulty. There is so much we want to see on the south island and don't know how to best put this together.

We want to do Wanaka, the Milford road sights Te Anau and a day cruise of Doubtful Sound plus anything else we can manage to fit in before our flight from Queenstown on the 15th,

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I have been reading your postings and know how knowledgable you all are so thank you in advance.

Hi Weta,

Were you able to see my post about the North Island part of our trip? Would you change anything? We have such a short time to do so much we really would love the highlights of both North and south Islands. We love scenery and city too. Appreciate any comments you may make to help us plan the most optimum trip.

Hi yksy,

IMHO as a frequent visitor to NZ (I live in Australia) with your limited time frame I would drop the North Island entirely and concentrate on the South Island. However you need to understand that our activities are all outdoor based and from our perspective cities look at their best when viewed in the rear view mirror of your car or from a departing aircraft.

"Musts" for us on the North Island are the Bay of Islands, Thermal Wonders and Maori Culture.

Cheers,

You ever been to Yellowstone? If not, Rotorua is a great place to visit. Even without the geothermal attractions, it's worth visiting to learn about Maori culture. No trains run there though.
