where to stay / what to see

Hi guys, need some help as I don't know many ppl who have done NZ before and starting to get confused with drive times & highways. We only have 8 nights so understand we won't be able to see the whole island.

We are going over New Years and arriving in Christchurch 5pm 26/12. We are hiring a car and planning to do the West Coast - where should we stop? - Is it worth going upto Westport? How far is this drive? Departing 2pm 3/1.

So looking at

1 night Christchurch

1 night ?? Is Hanmer Springs worthwhile?

2 nights Fox Glacier

4 nights Queenstown & going to Milford Sound one day

Any suggestions to assist, greatly appreciated, thank you :)

Hi,

What are your interests? What activities do you wish to undertake other than the Milford Sound tour? What do you want to tick off your bucket list? Ar you flying into Christchurch and out of Queenstown?

There are heaps of itineraries to choose from have a look at the RHS of the South Island page and the things to do at the top.

I would suggest:

Day 1. Christchurch explore.

Day 2. Christchuirch to Franz Joseph via Arthurs Pass.

Day 3. Franz or Fox Glacier

Day 4. Glacier to Wanaka

Day5. Wanaka explore

Day 6. Wanaka to Queenstown

Day 7. Milford tour

Day 8. Depart Queenstown for home.

Cheers,

Thanks your prompt response. Yes, flying into Christchurch - out of Queenstown.

I shall investigate Wanaka - haven't heard of that or Arthur's Pass.

The plan is to just see some beautiful sights, the glaciers and do some action stuff in Queenstown and maybe a wine tour if we get time from there?

Hi,

The DEs will chip in soon and give more extensive advice. However the road over Arthurs Pass heading to the west coast and the Crown Range Road from Wanaka to Arrowtown and Queenstown provide picture postcard scenery. A shame you aren't doing the trip when the mountains are all covered in snow rather than the peaks.

There is more to do in Wanaka and Queenstown than you could fit in during a few years let alone a few days. Your decisions will be "what to choose" :-)

Hi,

I forgot to add when in Queenstown don't miss the Shotover Jet and a tour of Skippers Canyon. IMHO two things that should not be missed. Mountain biking should be worth a look without the snow ;-0

I would recommend OZRCflyer's itinerary with minor modifications:

27th. turn right after Arthurs Pass and stay the first night at Punakaiki

28th. Drive to FJG (time for a heli-flight)

29th. Explore glaciers if you want to do a full day tour.

30th. Drive FJG to Wanaka

31st. Wanaka to Te Anau (or stay in QTN if you want to party)

1st. Milford Sound

2nd. Te Anau to Queenstown/spend the day in QTN

3rd. Fly home.
