iterinary suggestions! HELP!!!

with less then 6 months before we fly to christchurch i still havent got any idea of what a good iterinary will be! we have 4 children ages 2, 4, 8, 9 and im really struggling to work out whats the best places to visit and best places to stay. we arrive on jan 26th in christchurch in late afternoon and would like to have 2 nights around christchurch so need ideas on what to do there, then we have to be on the ferry in picton around the 7th of feb as we have to be in the north island for a family get together on the 8th. any ideas will really really help. ive seen some really good iterinaries on here but they all seem to be a circle loop starting from christchurch and ending in christchurch so need a one way trip but happy to back track to other locations if we need to. thankyou Guys :-)

With kids that age I'd recommend a slow-paced trip taking in Kaikoura, Golden Bay, Nelson District and the Marlborough Sounds. This would include lots of wildlife, nice easy walks, safe beaches and good scenery. I'd recommend taking an all-terrain stroller for the two-year-old, that will give you more options for nice short walks.

Some places I'd recommend staying:

Are you hiring a people-mover? Or thinking of a motorhome?

You've got the time to see the best of the South Island. There is loads for children to do around wanaka, Queenstown and the West Coast - even if it isn't the high adrenalin stuff.

With 12 days in the SI you could still do that loop Chch-back-to Chch in 10 days, taking in the glaciers (no need to pay for helicoters or guided hikes - just a short walk from the car park will be interesting; then continue on to Wanaka; Queenstown; Mt Cook & Chch - possibly time to squeeze in Milford Sound too. Then from Chch north to Kaikoura & on to Picton & the ferry.

It really comes down to your interests & expectations. Since you live so close, you'll be back!!

Where are you meeting family on the 8th? If it's the southern bit of the North Island, a ferry on the 7th will be okay, any further you might need to try for an earlier ferry.

Waitangi Day is on 6 February, and the Sevens is on in Wellington on 7 and 8 February. If you need to overnight in Wellington you should find accommodation now. Wellington will be very, very busy. The ferry might be busier than usual as well.
