South Island route

We ( 2 adults) are driving the South Island for 8 nights . We want to go to Nelson ,Abel Tasman Park,Kaikoura and Marlborough sounds before heading south to Queenstown. What route would give us the most time in these places ? It seems like we will backtrack no matter what. We plan to drive south around Lake Tekapo rather than the west coast. We hope to spend 3 nights in Queenstown area and Milford Sound. Flying back to Auckland from Queenstown.

Also...is. Chistchurch worth stopping in with our limited time? Sounds lovely but concerned that there's too much repair going on still.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You'll find it hard to fit 4 places up north AND 3 nights in QTN into 8 nights as it really takes 3 days/2 N to drive between the north and the south. Do you arrive in CHC? Where will you have flown from? ( ie will you be jet-lagged or are you simply arriving from the NI?); Do you have 9 days?
