Need Advice - 13D NZL South Island Itinerary (Self Drive)

Hi, my girlfriend and I will be self driving in New Zealand South Island in the 1st two weeks of November 2013 and have come up with the 13 Days Itinerary below and would like to know if it is feasible.

Day 0 - Arrival in Christchurch International Airport (2330hr)

Day 1 - Touring in Christchurch

Day 2 - Driving from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass (Morning - Visit Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, Afternoon - Arthur's trekking, Stay over in Arthur's Pass)

Day 3 - Driving from Arthur's Pass to Fox Glacier (Morning - Visit Punakaiki pancake rocks, Afternoon - Climb Fox Glacier, Stay over in Fox Glacier)

Day 4 - Driving from Fox Glacier to Wanaka (Afternoon - Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World, Stayover at Wanaka)

Day 5 - Driving from Wanaka to Queenstown (Morning - Visit to Arrow town, Afternoon - Tour of Queenstown, Stay over in Queenstown)

Day 6 - Stay in Queenstown (Whole day - Sky diving & Luge, Stay over in Queenstown )

Day 7 - Driving from Queenstown to Te Anau (Glow worm Cave, Stay over in Te Anau)

Day 8 - Tour to Milford sound or Scenic flight to Milford ( Stay over in Te Anau)

Day 9 - Driving from Te Anau to Mount Cook via Lindis pass (Star Gazing Tour, Stay over in Mount Cook)

Day 10 - Driving from Mount Cook to Akaroa via Lake Tekapo (Morning - Lake Tekapo, Afternoon - Alpaca Experience Akaroa, Stay over in Akaroa)

Day 11 - Driving from Akaroa to Kaikoura (Sightseeing of sperm whales, killer whales, humpback whales and fur seals, Stay over in Kaikoura)

Day 12 - Swimming with Dolphins in Kaikoura (Stay over in Kaikoura)

Day 13 - Shopping in Christchurch before returning the car at 6:30pm.

In addition, we are also interested in visiting a wine farm and watch penguins in their natural habitat but are not sure if there is sufficient time. Hence, would like to know if there are any places where we could slot these activities into our itinerary?

Lastly, we would also like to know if there are any other suggested activities/attractions/tours which we should also do during our trip.

Thanks and really appreciate your help!

Cheers!

You have a lot of driving planned and one day that I think is too much is day 9, Te Anau to Mt Cook - this is 5-6 hr and nit relay recommended.

I would jiggle the middle days a little:

5. Wanaka to Te Anau

6. Milford Sound

7. Te Anau to QTN

8. Sky-diving etc

9. QTN to Mt Cook ....

There are penguins near Akaroa, but I'm not sure exactly wher eyour farm stay is. Google Pohatu Penguins...

Some of your days ( 3 & 4) have a long drive, but you plan to see the main attractions of a place in the afternoon after arriving. When you say 'glacier walk', do you mean walking to see the glacier or doing a tour. If just walking, this will be ok but not if you plan a tour. There are many wineries around Queenstown, so that wold be the obvious place to do this.

day 4 - allow 5.5 hours to drive Fox to Wanaka if you plan to stop for a few brief moments to see waterfalls, views etc, plus lunch. Wanaka also offers the best skydive in the country.

and yes, as mentioned already, best go Wanaka - Te Anau - Queenstown - Aoraki/Mt Cook

You have a very busy visit planned, enjoy :)

Hi all,

Thank you for the advice!

We have changed our itinerary accordingly below.

To Telly: We are planning to just do a half a day glacier hike from 2:35pm on Day 3. :)

Separately, can we know if the Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is worth to visit? Also, I understand that there are no tours available for that and am wondering if it will be dangerous.

Lastly, would like to know if there are any places which you think we should also visit during our trip?

Thanks guys!

Regarding Cave Stream, the initial part of it is the deepest, about crotch to waist deep (depending how tall you are). It's generally safe, but use common sense. If it's been raining heavily and the water there is surging and brown, don't go in! Wear warm but waterproof clothing (no jeans!!!) and bring two headlamps. I would recommend dropping off a towel at the upper end so it's waiting for you when you get out.

We were wanting to do Cave Stream, but had a deadline to return our campervan. I also wasn't sure what we would do with our wet clothes with a flight home early the next morning. It appears you have plenty of time to enjoy it. Castle Hill just before Cave Stream is also worth a look.

You definitely need a minimum of one torch per person plus a spare, for Cave Stream. It is a totally wild stream, without lights, steps or anything, except a rope at the exit for you to pull yourself up the final waterfall. People have drowned in there, so if you are not confident about being in water, in the dark, don't do it!
