Feedback on Road Trip Itinerary Please :)

Hi,

Me and my friend are from Australia and will be hiking the Milford Track in Nov and I have put together the following itinerary for us afterwards. I was hoping to get some feedback from others who know the area. I have already been to the Glaciers and Lake Wanaka so haven't included them in here. We're travelling on a budget so will be staying at hostels etc where possible and probably won't be able to extend our trip much beyond this.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

End of Hike catch boat to Milford Sound and stay at Milford Sound

Day in Milford Sound to relax and do boat tour of the sound.

Milford Sound to Queenstown; sleep in Queenstown

Day and Night in Queenstown

Pick up hire car and drive to Dunedin; sleep in Dunedin

Day & Night in Dunedin

Drive to Lake Tekapo stay the night

Day in Lake Tekapo / Mt Cook stay the night

Drive to Christchurch / Night in Christchurch

Drive to Kaikoura / Night in Kaikoura

Drive to Christchurch and fly home

Welcome to the forum AG :)

Your trip looks good, but why Tekapo? Aoraki/Mt Cook offers far more in stunning scenery and excellent walks. You can cover all of Tekapo's highlights in 15 minutes as you pass through on your way to Chch.

happy travels :)

Thanks for the feedback. I saw Lake Tekapo on a website and thought it might be a good place to visit. Would you suggest driving Dunedin > Mt Cook / 1 Night in Mt Cook > Drive to C'Church?

I would be interested to hear if there are any places along our path that I haven't planned to visit but are worth going to.

You can include some off-the-beaten-path places on your itinerary. I would drive from Queenstown to Dunedin via St Bathans, Naseby and Middlemarch. St Bathans and Naseby are old gold-mining towns with a lot of history. Naseby has an indoor curling rink open year-round, which would make for a very different stop for a break in the driving, trying something new. The drive down through Middlemarch is through wonderful scenery, very different from the alps - it's all tussock and big rocks and barren-looking but beautiful.

Dunedin is worth two full days if you have time - one for the city and one for the peninsula.

Moeraki has the boulders, of course, but also a walk to the lighthouse, with seals, penguins and an old pa site. Fleur's Place is an excellent seafood restaurant there.

Oamaru is worth a look around, with interesting old buildings and good cafes and restaurants. They also have a new Steampunk Centre, which could be worth look. (Haven't been there myself yet, planning on getting down this summer to check it out.) aa.co.nz/membership/…

Driving up the Waitaki Valley inland you could visit Elephant Rocks. If you stop at the Vanished World Centre in Duntroon you can get a trail map of all the geological sites in the area, for fossils etc.

If you like hiking, plan at least two nights in Mt Cook, and pray for great weather - it is truly magical hiking around there on a good day!

Personally I would leave Kaikoura for a later upper South Island trip - it makes a very convenient stop on the way up to Nelson/Marlborough. This will allow a bit more time for hiking and exploring down south. Or you could spend that day in Akaroa, doing a cruise/swim with Hector's Dolphins.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm wondering how Lake Wanaka and Tekapo compare?

Lakes are equally beautiful and surrounded by snow capped peaks. The two towns differ in that Wanaka is a town, whereas Tekapo is just a village. Wanaka has many activities, accommodation options, restaurants, cafes, bars etc. If deciding between the two, I wouka. Tekapo is more of a 'stop to have lunch' place.ld definitely go for Wana

Lakes Wanaka and Tekapo are equally beautiful. However, Wanaka is a resort town, whereas Tekapo is more like a bend in the road compared to Wanaka. The Mt John observatory is the biggest sight at Tekapo, and they have ice skating in the winter. Otherwise there isn't much there. Kiwi families go there for a place to "get away from it all." It's a pretty place to stop and take photos of the church by the lake and grab a coffee.

Angie, check out my recent posting for 21 day trip. May give you some ideas if it gets replies.

Also I am looking at Milford sound trek (think 4 days) and guess you need to pre-book to get space in sleeping huts.

I am solo so not sure if safe area to walk alone and my navigation is average.

Chrs

Ben
