All booked n ready for North Island, Now input for South!!

OK!! Finally Finally we know exactly how long we have in the South.

We will be spending 4 days in the North, then we will fly from AKL TO CHC on Monday sept 23rd due to arrive in CHC at around 2:20pm. We will fly out of CHC on Sunday OCT 6th at 6:am.

So we have a full 12 days in the South plus part of the day when we arrive.

Should we grab the car and head straight to Punakaiki?

What is the best way to get great use without over staying anywhere...doing it CHC TO CHC

We would love scenery and bush walks. We def want to do the glaciers, wanaka, te anau, mt cook, milford sound, queenstown, glenorchy (Do it from Queenstown?), maybe also Dunedin

Also am i missing anything major? Any advice appreciated!!

thanks!!!

To cover your wish list;

23 arrive Chch, drive to Arthur's Pass

24 drive to Franz Josef or Fox

25 explore glaciers

26 drive Haast Pass to Wanaka

27 drive to Dunedin

28 explore

29 drive to Te Anau

30 bus/cruise/bus Milford Sound

1 drive to Queenstown

2 explore

3 explore Glenorchy, stay Q'town

4 drive Lindis Pass to Aoraki/Mt Cook

5 drive to Chch

6 fly out

If wanting a more relaxed trip skip Dunedin - go Wanaka to Te Anau to Queenstown

hope this helps :)

I think you will find most people in Arthur's Pass sleep in a bed :)

I think WL's itinerary is the only sensible way to cover the things you want to see in the time available.

I was told I should change part of n itinerary to this....should I?

23 arrive Chch, drive to Hanmer and stay overnight

24 drive to Punakaiki via Lewis Pass and Greymouth, walk Pancakes Rocks and Truman Track, overnight in Punakaiki or Greymouth or Hokitika.

25 drive to Franz Josef, explore glaciers, try and get as far South as Lake Paringa.

26 drive Haast Pass to Wanaka.

Do you value the advisor's knowledge and experience?

Are you willing to forgo the really scenic Arthur's Pass for the lesser Lewis Pass?

It comes down to doing the trip you want to do, and not merely following the trip others are suggesting you do.

So do some reading, look at brochures and decide which route will suit you best.

Happy travels :)

I only had a few days on the South Island and this is what I did:

- Two nights at Abel Tasman Park...beautiful there. We spent a full day in the park kayaking and hiking. My favourite place in New Zealand.

-Two nights in Punakaiki. There wasn't a ton to do there...but it's beautiful scenery and we enjoyed some hikes etc.

-Spent the day driving from Punakaiki through Arthur's Pass to Christchurch. Stopped and saw the kias there...beautiful, large parots that will steal your food, lol.

-We arrived in Christchurch on Christmas day, had some dinner and relaxed.

-Day trip to Akaroa...Akaroa has tours where you can swim with wild dolphins. It was a highlight of our trip to N.Z. It is about an hour's drive from Christchurch.

-We spent a second night in Christchuch and then we flew back to Auckland.

To what advantage?

You won't get to Arthur's Pass before 5:30 or 6pm. That is surely enough for one day's travel?
