Appreciate the help on itineray South island ;-)

Hi there,

We are traveling the south island and just want some tips & tricks for our itinerary. We are traveling with a baby (almost 1 by then) and probably by car (unless advised otherwise).

Day 1: Wellington – Picton – Christchurch

Day 2: Christchurch – Mount Cook – Queenstown

Day 3: Milford Day Tour

Day 4: Free day in Queenstown

Day 5: Queenstown – Fox Glacier

Day 6: Half Day Glacier Walk

Day 7: Fox Glacier – Greymouth – Christchurch (with TranzAlpine)

Day 8: Fly from Christchurch to Auckland

Is this to ambitious with a baby?

I've also heard that it might be better to go from Christchurch to Greymount and end up in Queenstown to fly back to Auckland. If anyone has more advice on that then please do not hesitate.

Thanks in advance

Rowena

I suggest you fly into Queenstown and base yourselves there for 3 or 4 days. On your return trip up the west coast take a scenic flight over Mount Cook from Fox or Franz. This will give you more time for a day trip to Milford and allow extra time to explore Glenorchy,Arrowtown and Wanaka areas before driving up the west coast.

Not much of a trip - you'll spend most of the time in a car

Thanks for the reply. I really need to take into account the distances I see. Do you have any suggestions on what are the absolute highlight I need to see in such a short amount of time?

the loop you propose requires a minimum of 10 days.

And no, babies are not able to do a glacier hike - best to always read the tour websites before making any plans.

1 arrive Chch

2 drive (more scenic than the train) or train to Greymouth - drive to Hokitika

3 drive to Franz or Fox

4 drive to Wanaka

5 drive to Te Anau

6 explore Milford Sound, stay Te Anau

7 drive to Queenstown

8 explore

9 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

10 drive to Chch

Great, thank you! As I can see each ride is no longer +/- 4 hours. Still challenging I think, but doable.

Do we win some time if we do Mount Cook after Franz or Fox, and fly back from Queenstown. Maybe this way we can explore one of the items on the list a little bit longer. And what would be worth staying an extra explore day.

click on this http://maps.aa.co.nz/#directions

on tab A enter franz josef

on tab B enter mount cook village

you will see it is 483 kms from one to the other - a two day drive

always helpful to study a road map when planning any trip :)
