10 day self drive South Island

I'm planning a self drive tour of South Island for first time and would appreciate any suggestions

Plan so far

1. Arrive Christchurch

2. Drive Christchurch to queenstown

3. Queenstown to te anu

4. Doubtful sound overnight cruise

5. Queenstown

6. Queenstown to fox glacier

7. Fox glacier heli hike tour

8. Fox glacier to hokitika

9. Hokitika to Christchurch.

Are any of the drives too far?

I've got one extra day and not sure where to spend it?

If we visit doubtful sound is Milford sound also worth visiting?

Thanks

Welcome to TA. IMO driving Chch to QTN is too far for one day for a first time visitor, even assuming it will be summertime. Locals average 7-8 hours on this trip, without photo stops. Why not use your spare day to stop at Aoraki/Mt Cook on day 2?

We recently did a self drive similar to your schedule. I posted report on Oct 13 with some websites to check driving distances/times and road conditions. Hopefully the report may be helpful. I agree with recent comment - CCH to QTN in 1 day is too long.

Hello, I will be in NZ for 4 weeks in Jan 2014, I was looking at the best way to see the best of both islands. In the end I have decided to get the bus from CHC to QTN and hire a car there. I would prefer to get to QTN quickly and easily and then start driving around fjordland and up the west coast.

The plan is to go to doubtful sound for a 1-2 day kayak cruise, from what i have read if you do to doubtful sound then first then millford is a bit of a let down due to the number of tourists and noise relative to doubtful. I still plan to drive by it but I think Doubtful seems to be the best option.

Can't wait, hope you enjoy it!

My advice was to go in the other direction. this is what we did and all the drives were reasonable:

Christchurch, Punakakki (could be Hokitika), Fox (could be Franz J), Wanaka, Te Anau, Queenstown, Mount Cook, Christchurch.

You will have a very rushed trip and you may have to forego the west coast.
