This is pretty agressive! I would slow it down just a fraction to make it more relaxing:

Day 4. Drive to Wanaka rather than all the way to QTN

Day 5. Drive to QTN & explore

Day 6. Milford tour

Day 7. Mt Cook

Day 8 drive to. chch....

Thanks for your reply. Whats the benefit of staying the night in Wanaka? Id rather get to queenstown and get into a hotel so that next day i dont have to carry my luggage when exploring.

Also, i was considering taking the drive from christchurch to greymouth and dropping the train? Will it make the trip more hectic?

The benefit of staying in Wanaka is that it is a wee gem of a place - well worth visiting.

Plus visitors average 6 hours to drive Franz to Wanaka - most find that plenty of driving for one day without continuing another 1 to 1.5 hours to Queenstown.

What time of year are you planning the visit?

Any other comments on the itinerary? Is it too agressive as zhuhai2007 points out. Im especially double minded about the drive from chch to greymouth. Im also hoping to cover the tasman glacier tour and drive back to chch the same day. Since half of the way is in plains im hoping to cover up.

I just did a south island road trip. Wanaka is a place you shouldn't miss, if you want to include queenstown, since you have only a day to explore I'd suggest plan before hand the activities you'd like to do. given your tight schedule you may want to give punakaiki a miss, 'cos that's a bit out of the way. Also remember, drive from fox to QTN in day is ambitious.

day 1 : chrtchurch

day 2 : drive to Mt. Cook

day 3 : Drive to Queenstown

day 4 : Milford sound

day 5 : queenstown activities

day 6 : Drive to wanaka

day 7 : start early drive to fox, so that you can catch the noon session of half day glacier walk. if you want to do the full day, you'll have to wait for the next day.

day 8: drive to chrtchurch

its pretty packed. If you want to relax it, you'll need to dump Milford. If you are DIY person, I think you'll prefer spending the day on a glacier walk than driving and sailing just to see waterfall. I personally did fiordland but I stayed overnight on doubtful sound and that gives one time to appreciate the fiord, being rushed doesn't do justice to this magnificent geological formation.

Thanks this is helpful. Where did you park when you went for the doubtful overnight? Also did you cover the tasman glacier boat ride at mt cook? What would you recommend in Wanaka?

Also we are planning a skydive. Is it better in Queenstown or Wanaka?

Skydive Wanaka :)

1 arrive Christchurch

2 TranzAlpine to Greymouth, drive to Franz Josef

3 explore glacier

4 drive to Wanaka

5 drive to Queenstown

6 explore

7 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

8 drive to Chch

9 fly home

don't speed on the Caterbury Plains - this and the North Island's Desert Road gathers more speeding fines than any other place in NZ. The police sit and wait for visitors with over-stuffed itineraries.

We parked at the Real Journey visitor centre car park. We had infact stayed overnight at manapouri.. which itself is a gem.
