Hi all,I am planning on driving up the West Coast departing Queenstown and arriving Nelson.Planning on visiting many of already recommended sites such as the glaciers, Hokitika gorge and pancake rocks to name a few.I have couple days to spare and wonder whether a day or two around Karamea is worthy?

It is quite nice up that way. The Oparara Basin limestone formations and Honeycomb Hill Caves are worth a look and there are lots of nice walks in the area. See this page for more info:

If you have time, three nights in Karamea would be worthwhile. On the drive up, stop for the Charming Creek walkway. On one full day, explore the Oparara Basin and do the guided tour of Honeycomb Hill Caves. The other day, walk to Scotts Beach (at the beginning of the Heaphy Track, nikau and rata forest) and do a half-day of kayaking, biking or similar, fishing, or birdwatching around the estuaries.

On the way to Nelson, Maruia Falls is worth the detour, especially if it's been raining.

Karamea has some wonderful sights. Charming Creek walkway is stunning Oparara basin walks are not to be missed and do some of the start of Heaphy track. Stop at Denniston on the way and do the mine tour and marvel at the harsh life and how the early settlers survived in the barren area.
