With only two weeks IMHO you only have time to sample some of the attractions of either island not both !

The North Island has the thermal wonders, extant Maori culture, the larger cities (not what NZ is about) and some wonderful scenery and activities.

The South Island has Fiordland, The glaciers, Stewart Island, The Otago Peninsula, Hanmer Springs, "drop dead" gorgeous scenery and more activities than you could undertake in several life times. You could easily spend your entire trip in the Queenstown/Wanaka area and just sample some of the activities and attractions.

Why are you intending to fly from Queenstown to Auckland? Why not drive from Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook and back to Australia from there or fly home direct from Queenstown.

Queenstown to Milford, cruise, back to Queenstown takes 13 hours by bus and should never be attempted by car. driver fatigue is the main cause of NZ road accidents and the Miflord Road is a high number of accidents through faulty planning such as this.

Either do the trip over 2 or 3 days or bus there/back.

Please plan wisely and travel safe.

I think your itinerary looks pretty good. It will give you a taster, and hopefully leave you wanting to see more.

There are some geothermal attractions on the road between Taupo and Rotorua that you could visit. In the Bay of Islands, you can also visit the Treaty grounds at Waitangi and take the ferry across to Russel.

These two points have already been stated, but I'll chime in some other factors to consider. Driving yourself Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is 10 hours on the road. The driver will be concentrating on road conditions and not able to enjoy the scenery. By the time you pay for gas, it isn't much more to take a coach trip and both of you can relax! If you have the funds, the better option is to take the coach-cruise-fly option.

If you are going to drive to Mount Cook, you will be almost halfway to Christchurch. Check airfares. You will probably find that Christchurch-Australia flights are a bit cheaper than Queenstown-Australia fares. There will be more options to choose from as well.

I like your plans for the North Island. February is a wonderful month to enjoy coastal scenery, marine activities and beaches. While the thermal region has excellent year round attractions. You have chosen a good itinerary for this island.

In your trip to Taupo you are doing a lot of unnessasary travel. I would recommend you go to Hobbiton on the way down and stay the first night in Rotorua. Then go to Taupo on second night and go to Waitomo on way back to Auckland. Alternatively go in the opposite direction
