I find your itinerary a little confusing to read. I make it only 8 days including arrival day! If you arrive in AKL on Xmas "eve", when will you visit the museum? Similarly if you fly out on NYE how will you see the fireworks in AKL? AKL is quite a distance from Auckland 's CBD & it would make sense to minimise the driving by either staying close to the airport if you arrive late, or continuing straight on to ZQN if you arrive early on the 24th.

What are your interests & budget? Is your domestic flight on the 31st already booked and where does it originate? Assuming it is Queenstown the logical place to spend the 30th would be Queenstown - heaps for all the family to do, with or without the rental car.

Wanaka has a good number of day spas.

I like this one http://www.sanctuarydayspa.co.nz/dayspa.aspx

where to stay? Anyplace you can get. Queenstown is probably fully booked over New Years Eve and Wanaka will also be busy www.wotif.com/search/results…

best of luck :)

Do you recommend, RT from Christchurch, traveling clockwise to Mt. Cook, Te Anau, Christchurch, Wanaka, Greysmouth, Arthur's Pass, Kaikoura, and back? Or doing it Counter clockwise. Another tripadvisor thread said it was a prettier drive doing it counter. Any thoughts?
