Jun2014 plan

Hi all,

We're now thinking of perhaps spending our days in South Island... We're travelling with 2 kids (9 and 12YO) and a 65YO (healthy with capability to walk like normal), arriving Christchurch on 14th June AM, and flying out on 24th June, noon flight. We'll rent a car.

How should our loop be and where should we be based cos was thinking where are the accommodation I should be looking into? Thinking of Christchurch, Tekapo, Wanaka, Queenstown...

Kids would love Snow Farm Lodge for snow tubing and sledding and ski so we thought we should spend at least 2 nights in one of the snow accommodation... I'd love to see Milford Sound

Any advice?

Welcome to the NZ Forum. With only 10 days in winter I strongly recommend that you include a domestic flight eg CHC to ZQN (Queenstown). It will save you at least 2 days of driving & recovery from jet lag.

1. Arr CHC & take a flight to ZQN (stay 3 N)

2/3. Explore QTN & relax;

4. Drive to Te Anau (stay 2 N)

5. day trip by coach to Milford Sound

6. Drive to Wanaka (stay 3 N)

7/8. snow fun

9. Drive to Lake Tekapo via Mt Cook (stay 1 N)

10. Drive to Christchurch

11. Explore Chch; fly home.

You need to pay attention to the weather forecast daily & be aware of the risk of ice on the roads even if there is no snowfall. You will need to carry chains; know how to fit them; and hope you don't need to use them.

Er... I don't think I would recommend swimming with dolphins in June, especially to someone from a hot country like Singapore, if indeed the cruise company even has that option winter time.

There is Willowbank Wildlife Park in Chch, where you can see kiwi & kea as well as farm animals & kids can feed eels & salmon.

If you want to see marine mammals you need to include either Dunedin or Kaikoura, which is not really possible with your short stay & desire to play in the snow.

by the way. Wanaka and Queenstown are both an easy drive from Cardrona, so basing yourself in either town is a good idea, as snow is not always guaranteed in June! My pick would be Queenstown, as there's more fun for the kids if there is no snow.

For flight from CH to Queenstown, which flight time do we pick to be safe? We're arriving at 930am in CH
