Hi Simon

I'm hoping you have a private helicopter on standby - as planning to drive these distances each day is not realistic.

With just 12 days, you will need to skip Kaikoura, Akaroa, Hanmer

best read some of the many 10 - 12 day itineraries for a better handle on how much you can cover in 12 days.

also - don't plan any driving day one after arrival. After a night of no sleep you won't be fit to drive. Walking and sunshine will help get you over any jet lag.

Happy planning :)

It will help if you look up the driving times on a reputable calculator like www.aamaps.co.nz. For example on your planned Day 8, Milford Sound to Mt Cook Is 7:45 hr just driving - ie not counting lunch, toilet/fuel stops or photo opportunities. This would be exhausting with 2 drivers and dangerous with one.

Then on Day 9 you have another 6:17 hr drive planned. What do you expect to see apart from the road ahead? Please slow down & cut several destinations from your itinerary.

As a heads up, please don't listen to zhuhai for driving times - if you're an adult and have driven long distances before then the two days, Milford - Mt Cook, and Mt Cook - Hanmer are easy drives. Just make a day of it; stop and stretch your legs and enjoy some of the views along the way.

I would not recommend any visitor drive Milford to Aoraki/Mt Cook in one day.

Too many recent visitor accidents due to driver error.

And if coming from Singapore I doubt you are experienced in all day driving on twisty roads - please rethink and replan.

Zhuhai's time of 7:45 driving Milford Sound to Mount Cook jives completely with what maps.aa.co.nz states. That's straight driving, no stops. Don't do it!

As to your last two options, NO to option 1, for this very reason. Option 2 looks okay. More driving than I would want to do, but viable.

My source for travel times is always the AA calculator. Sure I can do these drives quicker on my own for the tenth or twentieth time but I frequently drive overseas visitors who want to stop for photos/craft shops/coffee/roadside stalls etc. You are on holiday & it is not a race.

Option 2 is more sensible than Option 1.

Enjoy your travels.

This is what I would do;

drive to Wanaka

drive to Te Anau

Milford overnight cruise

return from overnight, drive to Queenstown

explore

drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook...
