Please help us...Itinerary advice needed

We are planning a 1 week trip in North Island and 3 weeks trip in South Island, can anyone please help us in planning our itinerary. We are wine lovers and would love to stop by wine regions as well. We will be picking up the rental car and returning it in Auckland, renting with Apex car rentals because they offer free 2 way car ferry crossings. We would be grateful for your kind advices. Thank you

Welcome to the NZ Forum. There are loads of 2-3 week itineraries here for the SI. 1 week is hardly going to be enough to drive the NI TWICE. Consider dropping the car in Chch and flying back to AKL or else allow about 9 days for the NI, to perhaps include Napier/ Hawkes Bay wine region.

Dear Zhuhai,

Thank you for your kind advice.

Can you please kindly give us some itinerary advice on the 3 week itinerary in South Island? It will be our first trip to New Zealand for our 22nd wedding anniversary.

Thank you :)

Regarding wine regions along major tourists routes.

If you are flying into Auckland and renting a car from near the airport, you can easily visit Villa Maria Winery, which would be about a 5 to 10 minute drive from your car rental pick-up. Villa Maria offers a variety of wines made from grapes sourced from regions around NZ. There are many wineries near Auckland and on the nearby island of Waiheke. If driving from Napier/Hawkes Bay to Wellington, you can do some wine tasting en route in Wairarapa/Martinborough.

On the South Island, most of the wineries of Marlborough are concentrated around Blenheim, which is about a half hour from Picton (the South Island terminal for the interisland ferry). Another South Island island wine region you can easily visit is Central Otago; the majority of its wineries are within 45 minutes of Queenstown. Other smaller wine regions on major tourist routes are those around Nelson and those in the region of Waipara (between Christchurch and Kaikoura).

Have a look at this link showing a map indicating wine regions:

When you arrive in the airport, have a look at Cuisine Magazine's Wine Country Guide which includes maps and lists wineries and restaurants for the various regions. Here's a link to their 2013 guide:
