Route Mt Cook to Christchurch, better option?

We will be driving on the 24 of June from Mt Cook to Christchurch.

Not sure if SH1 or SH72 is the better choice with regards to scenery as well as driving time.

According to AA timetable the driving time is 4.38, that should be for SH2. What is the apprx driving time via SH72?

Also, that day will be our only time in CC as we will be flying out the next morning, though there might not be enough time for a sightseeing or other activity anyway?

Your advice in this matter will be appreciated.

In my experience, SH72 adds about an hour because the road is more twisty, but it is more scenic as you hug the mountains until after Rakaia Gorge, whereas if you head out to SH1 after Geraldine the landscape is flat & the road is busier. Not really an issue. You could decide on the day, when you get to Geraldine. If the weather at Mt Cook is good you might want to spend an extra hour there; if you are getting tired of travelling, you might want to just get to Chch as quickly as possible.

Personally I would take the SH1 route and use the time saved at your destination. SH72 is a little more scenic, but not worth the extra time IMHO. Use the to have a quick look at the centre of Christchurc. You could take in the devistation and see how the city is at last starting to rise from the ashes. You dont often get to see the power of nature in quite such a dramatic way.
