We are planning a trip to the South Island and trying to nail down the number of nights in each area. We are very active, 2 teenage boys, love to hike, kayak, explore nature and sightsee for animals. We are planning to rent a car and stay in hotels along the way. Since we will be flying from Florida, USA and will be exhausted, we were thinking to fly into Queenstown and settle into a hotel for a few days and explore from there at first. This is the itinerary we were thinking, just not sure how many days in each location:
Queenstown 3 nights?
Milford Sound 1 night on boat
Te Anua 1 night
Glacier Area (Te Waonui) 2 nights
Abel Tasman Area (Nelson or???) 2 nights
Wine country 1 night
Kaikoura 1 night
That would leave a night, or even more depending on how many nights we should spend in each spot. We were also interested in Stuart Island, Mt Cook and Dunedin but don't want to spread ourselves too thin and/or be driving all the time. So we would be flying into Queenstown and out of Christchurch but are open to flying into/out of anywhere really! I really appreciate any guidance you can offer, it seems the more I read, the more confused I get!
