4 days in South Island

We are arriving in Christchurch on the Monday pm and flying back out Friday pm. We want to go on the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth and are thinking of then heading to Nelson and back to Christchurch doing both coast roads.where would we be better stopping? Does anyone have a better idea? We are in our 60's. Thanks

1. Re: 4 days in South Island

What are your interests? What time of year are you coming? You may have 4 N but effectively only 3.5 days. Greymouth to Nelson is 4:20hr if you go via Punakaiki (the coastal route), so there goes all of Tuesday.

Wed - explore Abel Tasman NP.

Thurs - drive to Kaikoura (3:25hr) - whale-watch or swim with dolphins etc (or walk around the coast).

Fri - Drive to Chch (2:30hr).

If you wanted to go inland to see Mt Cook:

Tues. Drive to Mt Cook via Lake Tekapo;

Wed. explore

Thurs. Drive to Oamaru (3hr)- penguin watch;

Fri. Drive to Chch (3:30hr)
