I used Apex, which is a second tier company, and was very pleased with the vehicle and service.
If it is not important for you to have the very latest model, and you don't need a depot in a rural town, you could do what Kiwis do & rent from a 2nd tier company like Omega, Go rentals, Apex, Jucy etc. You might get a 5-10 year old Japanese car but it should still be mechanically sound. Consider, too, whether you want to take the car across Cook Strait or are happy to swap cars and walk onto the ferry.
I just rented from Apex in April from the Christchurch airport location. It was not a speedy process but the staff were friendly. We had an older Toyota Corolla with a lot of dings, but I didn't care what it looked like as long as it was sound mechanically. And it was. We dropped the car in Queenstown at the airport 7 days later. I would rent from Apex again.
In April, we rented through Europcar for 12 days. Got a basically brand new RAV4 AWD that had plenty of room for the 4 of us and it had all the extras. Sunroof was great for viewing the scenery (and hanging the GoPro out of).
It wasn't the cheapest from memory but it was a no hassle experience.
