Easy to find accomodation in smaller towns?

My husband and I will be taking a driving trip through New Zealand for 2 weeks in late April and early May. We do not want to do the camping thing so are looking for accommodation on the route. Since we like to stop when we feel like it, would it be possible (and easy) to find accommodation once we are there without making reservations before our trip?

You will be fine

Perhaps do some research on the net before you leave to give you some idea of the type and price of accommodation you prefer.

You could get a copy of the B&B book when you arrive in NZ or the AA or Jasons Motel Guide if you are not going to have internet access while you are here.

Alternatively go to the Info Sites in the town when you arrive (or the town you are leaving - they can book ahead for you). These offices know of what is available and can book for you.

You will be just fine this time of year if you like motel style accommodation. B&Bs prefer a bit of notice, so phone a few hours ahead.

Easter weekend you would be wise to book ahead as it is always a busy time and can be hard to find accommodation in the hot spots.

If you are interested in staying at B & Bs try www.athomenewzealand.co.nz for a general guide or www.athomeinrotorua.co.nz for Rotorua. B & B's vary in price. Some are very upmarket and others are comfortable family homes in town or country but all must meet a certain standard of facilities provided. Some B & Bs will provide a dinner if there are no restaurants nearby but you would need to check this when booking. Most hosts will phone ahead to making a booking for you at a B & B in your next night's destination.

The 2 weeks after Easter are School Holidays so it will not be crowded, but it will not be quiet. You may be advised to book ahead say 1 night, otherwise make sure you have alternatives
