Christchurch and beyond for 10/11 days

Hello,

Me, husband and 26 year old son arriving in Christchurch on Thursday 9 July and returning on Sunday 19 July for very early flight home on 20 July.

After looking at advice on other forums, have decided on car rental & B&Bs instead of renting camper-van.

2 days in Christchurch and then a road trip for 7/8 days.

Suggestions on the 'not to be missed' areas, weather & clothing, and any other tips to make our exploration of this fabulous country in our limited time frame. Thanks, from Ireland

There is no such thing as cold weather, only wrong clothing. So dress appropiatly with suitable layers, lightweight is better when travelling. Rember sun blcok especially if you are going up ski fields.

The South Island is easy to negotiate by driving around it in a circle. (Being from the Northern Hemisphere you may find the navigator will hold the map upside down for better alignment)It is easy to follow by keeping the mountains on one side, and the sea on the other.

Most roads ae ok for you to drive on but do watch the weather forecasts and pay attention to the likely hood of snow on the passes.

There are two roads that I do not reccommend that you drive yourself

1 TeAnau to Milford Sound

2 Skippers Canyon (behiond Queenstown)

Take a bus to Milford Sound from either Queenstown or TeAnau.

Not to be missed

Arthur's Pass (check out the Kea), Glaciers, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Queenstown, TeAnau / Manapouri, Milford Sound.

Lake Tekapo and Pukaki, MtCook

There are many more places to take in as well if you have time or have been diverted due to weather, Like Dundin and the Albatross colony, Blue Penguins of Oamaru.

I would agree with Coaster2, but add in that if your stopping in either Wanaka or Queenstown, you want to allow yourselves at least a couple of days stop as there is lots to see and do in the area. For the Fiords don't drive, but you can either bus it or do a fly-cruise-fly if you want to make the journey shorter (the scenery from the plane is amazing particularly in Winter). Weather in NZ is similar to Ireland (bit dryer though!) but we have a much colder wind chill, so make sure you bring a warm coat and you will manage fine. You can get some great last minute accommodation deals if you need them with the likes of Ezibed

Hope this helps :)
