What is the Condition of ChristChurch after the Earthquake?

That was one of my concerns and could someone tell me if indeed, 'The George' is as an amazing Hotel as has been touted?

We were thinking of sraying there in May when we are in the region.

Thank you

There is only one modern hotel that has not reopened. Even then I understand they are refurbishing it rather than fixing it.

There is only minimal damage in the area close to The George. I think one or 2 chimneys on some of the older houses are down. Bits of the Arts Centre about a km along the road have been "strapped up" while they wait to fix it properly.

According to an article in "the Press" the Prime Minister rode out 1 significant aftershock in the George,

Hi LeTerrible

I have been to the George since the earthquake and it looks absolutely fine - It is a lovely hotel with great views if you get the right rooms.

Enjoy your stay in Christchurch and don't worry about the earthquake damage - the city has adapted around the damage and life goes on very normally. In some ways the City wears its scares with pride that it has survived and life has returned back to releative normality considering its only 5 months since we experienced the 7.1

cheers

Hi Le Terrible

Christchurch is fine. Walking around the CBD is easy all the roads are open to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. There are plenty of signs of repair work. For about 95% of the businesses in the CBD it is business as usual. Because there is nowhere in NZ safe from earthquakes we hav some of the toughest building codes in the world. Nobody was killed in the biggy or in the aftershocks

The George Hotel is amazing.

The George is an excellent choice of hotel.

as for Christchurch and earthquake damage. the most affected are people who are driving. there are two reasons, road and tram way upgrades and Earthquake.

many parts of roads, sometimes only one side will be cordoned off so as to keep people safe in the event of an aftershock coausing damage to a building. some buildings have braces up against them, all these cordons and braces impose on the available roadway, Last week, it taken me 30 min to drive from the hospital to the Square, there was the opening of the Buskers festival as well as a large sprting event along with street parade of contestants. fortunetly this isn't the case all the time, but the situation changes all the time. Take a bus or a taxi, it will save some of the confusion for you

Major work was being done in the CBD before the quake as the city was spruced up for the world cup. Tram lines are being laid and Hereford Street was being beautified. The Airport area is a bit of a mess, but that is totally unrelated, it is being redeveloped for both the RWC and the fact the numbers of people coming through has stretched it's capacity.

Most of the cordons in town from the quake are now gone. The braces on buildings provide a few interesting photo opportunities. The damaged buildings unlikely to be repaired are dissappearing quite fast.

As the others have said it is basically 'business as normal' in Christchurch - there are a few cordons around some buildings, but they won't really affect you.

If you do stay at the George, you MUST go to Pescatore (restaurant on 1st floor) - it is the best restaurant we've been to... food, service, atmosphere is all first class!
