Is Christchurch that worst after earthquakes?

I plan to travel NZ and read a review of a hotel in Christchurch -BEST WESTERN Camelot Motor Lodge which stated that"The city itself was barren. The middle of the city is blocked off and a lot of the buildings in the surrounding area are abandoned due to infrastructure problems. A lot of the housing was also severely affected in the earthquakes. Not much to do, it is rather sad to see the devestation. " How real is it?

It is very real. It will take a long time to rebuild sadly, but it is getting there!

Christchurch City is not a tourist destination at present, but don't let that deter you from visiting New Zealand. All the rest of the country is as beautiful as ever.

You will be outside the damage cordon if you stay at Camelot, or any other motel in Papanui Rd. There are virtually no inner city hotels open. Most are being demolished. The Botanic Gardens, Punting on the Avon, Willowbank, The Antarctic Centre & the Museum are open as usual. The Art Gallery should be opening soon. The gondola & tram are NOT operating. The Arts Centre is not open. The cathedral has been destroyed. Best to stay one night in Chch then move on.

I offer a different view. Christchurch is still worth a bit of a look around. There are not many opportunities to see how fast a major city springs back from such a major event. Earthquake tourism is fine in my book. The Cashel Mall is re-opening this weekend. rubble has been cleared and shops are opening in shipping containers. The place will be in partry mode. The bus exchange openens today. The cordoned area is getting smaller all the time and will be gone by April. pick a hotel or motel in riccarton or Papanui and you will be close to cafes and hotels. Christchurch has been down but it is far from out.

You will be amazed, not depressed.

We plan on staying for 3 nights in January. Don't want to travel further after the long flight, then we know there are wonderful restaurants from our last stay. A day trip to Akaroa / Peninsula is worth it and, if we have the impression that is OK, we want to have a look at the damages since we know how Christchurch looked before the earthquake.

In January you still won't be able to get inside the cordon. Current plans suggest it will be April before the demolitions are finished and the city centre will be safe for visitors. Restaurants are popping up in unusual places so you won't go hungry. 3N & 2D, with one spent at Akaroa sounds fine to me.

I am just back from a look around the re-opened Cashel Mall. It is alive and humming. Shipping containers are a feature of the contruction, but it looks and feels superb.

A visit here is a "must" for anyone passing through Christchurch.

Looking forward to visiting in the next day or so. Good to see that it was well supported in the weekend.
